Research: The nature of philosophy, philosophical anthropology.

Selected Publications: Author of Michel de Montaigne: Accidental Philosopher (Cambridge 2003), The Modern Self in Rousseau's Confessions (Notre Dame 1983): A Reply to St. Augustine, Death and the Disinterested Spectator: An Inquiry into the Nature of Philosophy (SUNY 1986), and Self Knowledge in the Age of Theory (Rowman and Littlefield 1996). Also author of "Montaigne and Skepticism" in The Cambridge Companion to Montaigne.

Currently working on a book on Montaigne tentatively titled "Montaigne and Modern Rationalism."

Fellowships and Honors: National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, 1982-83; Senior Fellow, Center for Humanistic Inquiry, 2003-2004.
