Seminar 2009

Heidegger and Nietzsche: The Issue of History

Organizers: Andrew J. Mitchell and Peter Trawny (Bergische Universität Wuppertal)
Location: Emory University, 216 Bowden Hall

The Emory University Institute for the History of Philosophy (IHP) will host its second annual summer workshop on June 16-25, 2009, on the topic of “Heidegger and Nietzsche: The Issue of History.”

IHP Summer Workshops are designed to bring together a group of faculty scholars specializing in specific areas of the history of philosophy for seminar style workshop sessions focused around a shared reading list. Ten participants meet in mornings and afternoons over the course of two four-day weeks for directed discussions and participant led close readings. The workshop format eschews the delivery of conference-style papers in favor of a more open and group-based engagement with the texts at hand. In so doing, the IHP seeks to foster conversations that will inform future scholarly work within the greater philosophical community. The IHP’s inaugural workshop addressed Neoplatonism in the Late Ancient and Early Medieval period. Future sessions in Modern Philosophy and other areas of the history are in the planning.

This year’s readings focus on texts by Nietzsche addressing the status of history and the eternal recurrence of the same as well as seminars and essays by Heidegger dealing directly with these same texts and/or advancing his own views on the history of beyng (die Geschichte des Seyns). It is hoped that in the convergence of these two figures on the issue of history, something might be gleaned regarding any supposed “overcoming” of metaphysics, the nature of an event, and the thinking of a world apart from the oppositions of presence and absence. Readings are in German with discussions in English.

The Institute is pleased to provide room, board, and travel expenses for all participants accepted into the workshop. Guests will be housed at the Emory Inn, located on the Emory University campus, walking distance from the central meeting location in the Philosophy department. A number of optional dinner excursions into various neighborhoods of Atlanta are also planned.

To apply, faculty are asked to send a cover letter addressing the relevance of the Heidegger/Nietzsche relation for current and/or future scholarly work along with a  CV to Professor Mitchell at the address below (by electronic or physical mail). Graduate student applicants should additionally include the names and contact information for two references. The application deadline is December 15, 2008 with decisions announced mid-January, 2009.
